10年中間選挙の結果、共和党が下院で過半数を占め、上院でも共和党による議事妨害（フィリバスター）を阻止するだけの議席を民主党は失っている。上記の政策を実現するための法案を成立させるには共和党議員の協力が不可欠である。

12年は大統領選となる。政権奪還を目指す共和党との調整は難航するであろう。

5.アジア諸国への言及、日本には言及なし

さて、一般教書の中で「Japan」は一度も出ていない。

「China」は4回、「South Korea」も4回言及されている。

特に中国はインドとともにその成長を指摘されている。ことに中国については、世界最大の民間太陽発電研究機関、世界最速のコンピュータなど技術力の向上を指摘している。

韓国については、教師が「国の建設者」とされていること、米韓FTAで7万人の雇用が創出されること、北朝鮮問題などで言及があった。

アメリカ大使館などのスタッフと話をしていても、アメリカ政府のわが国への関心が減りつつあると指摘される。
