Why are so many people wearing masks？
なぜ多くの日本人はマスクをするのですか。

There are many reasons. People wear them to avoid spreading their illness to others or to avoid catching a cold. Some people wear them to reduce their hay fever symptoms. Some wear them to keep warm in winter, or to keep their throat from getting sore from the dry air. Ladies sometimes wear masks to cover their faces when they haven’t had time to properly do their makeup.

理由はさまざまです。他人に病気をうつしたり、自分が風邪をひいたりするのを防ぐためにマスクをする人もいます。花粉症の症状を和らげるためにする人もいます。冬であれば防寒、あるいは乾燥からのどを守るためにしている人もいます。女性の中には、メークをきちんとする時間がなくて、顔を隠すためにマスクをしている人もいます。
