An keynote by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg strayed from the normal company news updates to make veiled references to the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign. He referenced comments by Republican frontrunner Donald Trump in particular, saying he heard "fearful voices calling for building walls" and halting immigration. Trump periodically talks about building a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, at the Mexican government's expense.
Here's what he had to say:
"As I look around and travel around the world, I am starting to see people and nations turning inword—against this idea of connected world and global community. I hear fearful voices calling for building walls and distancing people they label as “others.”
For blocking free expression, slowing immigration, reducing trades, and in some cases around the world even cutting access to the Internet. It takes courage to choose hope over fear. To say that we can build something and make it better than it is ever been before. One innovation at a time."
Zuckerberg's 30-minute speech laid out the company's 10-year plan, which included improvements in artificial intelligence, virtual reality and augmented reality and 'chatbots.'
